Charlotte, thank you so so much for introducing me to this. I’ve been scouring the internet for cleaning products that are sustainable AND cruelty free. So many products are still tested on animals where required by law and I hate that. I can’t wait to get my kit!!! I had to pause the video to click your link and order!!! 💕💕💕💕

I once has a Karen confront me about my son wearing ‘headphones’ on the bus and she could hear the music blaring and started banging on about how parents like me are the reason these teenagers are so disrespectful listening to loud music in a public space disturbing other people….my son is autistic and was wearing ear defenders to keep noise out with absolutely no sound coming out of them. I think about that almost everyday

SHIELA...The only way I can get over things like that is to rest assured, nobody gets along with them, if you knew more about how they are with others, you'd know.

Sheila... I'm tempted to say you should have explained it. But I've been in situations where I explained something, and they don't understand anyway, and don't apologize in the least. Even in comments on Flash-Player, I can explain 2-3 ways they misunderstood something, and they just keep saying the same thing AGAIN! People are nuts.

I am a 911 dispatcher. My greatest form of petty is telling the Karen calling 911-for an event that does not constitute an emergency-to hang up and call our non-emergency line. It comes to the same center and odds are I will probably answer it but it creates more work for them and that is good enough for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I was a dispatcher for 911 I repeated racist Karen's words back to her verbatim. She got .ad at me and said she was calling the news before hanging up on me 🤣

    • Ena Korać ex Šofranac
Ena Korać ex Šofranac Month ago +1

OMG... I believe you get more of those Karen- calls every single day.
It can be amusing or even funny, but I just don't understand how those people are functioning... I mean, they call 911 for something that not only isn't an emergency, but it's also so stupid that I get 2nd degree embarrassment!! Not only is that ridiculous, but it's actually quite harmful behavior... Because instead of responding to a Karen-call, there might be an actual emergency and someone might be in serious need of help... Someone might end up dieing, because the 911 operator couldn't answer the call, because a Karen was trolling the line!!!
I would give them every single time a fee when they call 911 for no reason. That might teach them to behave.

My dad has THE best way of dealing with Karens : he just stares at them. Silently. And then goes on about his business.

Exactly. They are seeking attention so don’t give it to them.

    • anondecepticon
      anondecepticon 2 months ago

A brief pause and stare followed by a mildly nonplussed “okay,” is my preferred method of dealing with Karens, rude people, and grown-ass adults behaving like children. It’s more effective than arguing because it gives them nothing to work with - technically you’re agreeing with them - but also silently communicates _You’re embarrassing yourself. I don’t know how to respond without calling attention to it and embarrassing you further, so I’m just going to agree and pretend it didn’t happen._ In other words, respond like they just did the verbal equivalent of farting in public. The social pressure makes them think twice about causing a scene.
ETA: If you’re working in retail or customer service and _have_ to engage, I don’t recommend this approach because it may earn you a reprimand for being disrespectful or some other bullshit CYA corporate response. In those situations I find it better to express sympathy and put the blame on the company/corporate/people higher up the food chain while maintaining there’s nothing you can do. “I know, we’re really backed up but they won’t hire more people,” “It’s so stupid, masks don’t even work but they make us wear them,” etc. Basically the “Don’t blame me, I’m on your side,” approach. It doesn’t work in every situation, but it can shift a frustrating attack on you for doing your job to sympathy for being subject to The Man.

I like telling them “it’s not like I’m in a hurry or have a hot date”. Then I chat up the cashier by finding something to compliment them for or if they apologize for stuff that isn’t their fault I just say go with “it’s okay, I used to work retail (true)” and chat them up more! With smiles even. And I make sure that as I go to leave I make eye contact with the complainer and use my best Grinch smile.

I've had so many people try and get me to rant with them, usually about slow lines. I give a glare and turn around and refuse to talk or look at them. They never know what to do with me and I don't have to argue. Then I'm extra nice to the person working there and tip extra if it's an option.

@SpaceX rocks! Doesn't the progressiveness of a mental illness depend on the exact illness? I haven't studied human mental illnesses specifically as you say you have, but I am in vet med so I'm not a total stranger to the nature of science/biology/medicine... and I had the impression that not every disease or condition is going to behave the same way? Perhaps bipolar disorder may be that way but surely not every one?

Aww, the little boy at the pool saying "let's go home" makes my heart hurt. what could possess a person to want to harass a child's mother while they are having fun until the child does not even want to be there anymore? Until the child can no longer have fun at the pool cause mommy is stressed and the man is yelling at her and him. Honestly, if I were a mother, idk HOW I would react, but it wouldn't have gone well. This mother's self-control while getting yelled at by this old man about what kind of mother she is is phenomenal and I seriously respect that for the sake of her kid.

    • Thirst Without Borders
Thirst Without Borders 4 days ago +1

Yeah, my heart broke there. I once had a Karen talk really rudely to me, because we retrieved my sons ball that had fallen on a part of the lawn that wasn't open to walking on it in a public park. I apologised and explained, and then that bitch bent down and told my son he killed some ants by walking on that grass. The lawn that was getting neatly clipped by a tractor-style mower. I nearly lost it right there, but my son nearly cried, so I picked him up and told her I already apologised. She then told us not to do this again, or we would be banned. My son is afraid of going back there since then, which is a shame, because its a beautiful place.
I usually teach my son to be polite and respectful of authority, but in this case I told him she was a mean woman, who can't ban us from anywhere, how would she remember our faces. Bitch.

I used to be a lifeguard and there was a certain section of the pool that was for adults. One day there were people who were over the age requirement splashing snd having a good time and I was yelled at by a Kevin that it was illegal to be splashing in that section of the pool. I was like no, it isn’t. Only requirement is to be of a certain age which they are all older than. It’s went on for 15 minutes until the old guy told me he and his friends would never come back because of it. I just told him no problem, just means other people will get to enjoy the chairs and chaise lounges that they were always hoarding to prevent other people from using them. Dumbass was back the next day anyway

    • Margarida Ferreira
      Margarida Ferreira 23 days ago

@Elizabeth Burns-Gundel exactly! And she knew that usually that tactic works because the room was paid by the taxi driver that she bullied the night before. Poor old man talked to me the night before, so I was already aware of that person in the hotel even before the check-out. They know that most people if you say you are an important person from the government, and you seem to be from "high class" will believe them and do as they say. She was unlucky I was the person at the front-desk that morning 😂

    • Elizabeth Burns-Gundel
      Elizabeth Burns-Gundel 24 days ago

@Margarida Ferreira Yup, checks out. My ideal response would be, "go ahead, and see how hard they laugh at you or get mad because you are wasting their time." The point isn't carrying out the threat; the point is the intimidation. Or they do carry out the threat because they have the narcissistic idea that the police / other authorities will always be on their side just because of who they are (which is a whole 'nother problem, but this isn't the place lol).

    • Margarida Ferreira
Margarida Ferreira 3 months ago +3

Exactly! I once had a customer that after spending the night and having breakfast said she wanted her money back because our hotel was not good enough. And that I needed to do it or she would call the police, and she was a laywer, and worked in the parlament. Yeah... Could not care less.

@LollyTea and I'm absolutely ok with that. Those police officers are on duty, have full gears on... So you can't say that you didn't know that they are police officers.
Here in Montenegro she wouldn't have the opportunity to scream that much. They wouldn't only arrest her, but also put her under psychiatric evaluation. Because it's not considered as normal to scream like this at an uniformed officer.
But I believe that's a matter of respect.

That Lady who insulted the Police Officers should never come to germany. Insulting someone in fact is sueable here, smaller insults get you a fine or up to one year in prison. This is probably the most embarrassing thing I will ever admit to online, but my mother is a Karen. She once lost it at the Bell store because they didn't have the phone she wanted in blue. I was standing behind her, mortified, and just apologizing over and over to everyone while she ranted about there not being a blue phone. The phone she wanted wasn't even made in blue. It was awful and I felt so bad.

So, my parents got the honor of meeting a store Karen today!
So, my parents were waiting in line at Fred Meyers in the self-checkout. All of the sudden, in the lane next over was a lady screaming at this poor cashier because she forgot to use her coupons. She was screaming at her to REDO her store purchase even though she had already paid. So my stepdad started making passive-aggressive comments to a friend of his that was farther up the line, and she said "yea! I bet they'll groceries down faster if this b*tch would move!!". Everyone started joining in on the comments, which made her FURIOUS.
In the end, it took THREE store managers to get her out of there. And when they did, she glared at my step-dad as he left.
*I'm so upset I missed it-*

Just ignore those Karen's when they try to mess with you: don't speak to them, don't look at them, just do not interact in any way, but keep on minding your business. Karen's need whatever comes back from you like a tennis player needs someone on the other side of the court to keep the ball in the game. If you do not play the ball back, the game is over fast, they will just peter out.

I've seen PLENTY of people get offended for other people. Disabled comedians deal with this when they tell jokes about their own lived experiences. Someone in the audience who doesn’t have that (or any) disability gets offended. Like, ma'am, that comedian is telling you something that actually happened to them. They wouldn’t share it if they didn’t want you to laugh.

Was driving, slowly, thru a parking lot, pull in a space, and a lady comes running across the lane behind me and starts yelling the second I step out of my car, yelling at me that I need to slow down. ??? I was doing, like , 2 miles and hour if that. Then she yells that I almost hit her, ony she was NOWHERE NEAR ME!!!! I told her she was no where near me and that I didn't almost hit her. She yells again I need to slow down cause I almost hit her and she has 3 kids in the car. I said, "ma'am you were not near me" again, she yells "WHATEVER!!" and turns her back to me. Did someone make her parking lot monitor and not terll anyone??

Charlotte, for disturbing the peace, it really depends on where you live. I live in one of those places who freaked out and called the police (more than once) because my husband or sons were practicing their instruments at 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon. They are all professional musicians and get paid for performing that same music.

I do have to admit though, some of these were, to begin with, justified. We don´t know what happened before the filming started, it might just as well have been the sassy reaction of those filming that escalated the situation and brought upon the overreaction portrayed.

*Crazy Karen Neighbor:* I got my daughter a car for her birthday and we both park on the street so we don’t block my dad in the driveway. The day she got it my next-door neighbor came out and yelled at her for parking on the street in front of OUR HOUSE. She said when she has family come over sometime that week she wants them to have room to park. I told crazy pants if her family couldn’t find one spot on our entire extremely vacant street I would move my car so they could park there. She still wasn’t happy and threatened that if they couldn’t find a spot she would have my daughters car towed. I tried to explain that she has no rights to the street and no one would tow it since we weren’t blocking anything. Needless to say we did not end things on a happy note. A friend on the HOA told me she reported our cars to them and when they did nothing she contacted them every time we worked on our house to see if we had asked for permission. I live in a strict neighborhood where you can’t take a tree down or plant a bush without permission. It is hell living next to a Karen but I will leave it alone because she’s just a sad old lady with nothing to do.

It never ceases to amaze me the number, and quality, of people that really don't know the difference between "public" and "private" property! I am always telling people "Just because people are welcome in a business, that does not make it public property!"

and even if something is public property, that does not give just anyone the right to be there at any time and not have any restrictions on that. there are entities that control access to properties. for example, the public library or city hall. sometimes they are closed and the doors are locked. It's public property right? shouldn't you have the right to go in there 24 hours a day? lol

I had a weird conversation once. A friend of mine I knew for a long time was doing a joke about cancer, I laughed and one the people in the group said she was very offended and said it was not funny to joke about peoples with cancer.
They were a HUGE blank and I said "but I found that funny and I have cancer". She started to argue that it could not be the case for everyone. And I had to explained to her, that most people at the hospital joke about everythings because we want to feel normal. Included us in the joke it's the best you can do.
Also my friend was talking TO ME and she was not in the conversation (and talking to someone else), the world is not a safe place for your feeling. I understand being trigger by thing, but it's her problem.
And the people who are offended are ALWAYS the persons without the things in question.

This was almost three years ago and she's still fighting and making jokes. I think it helps her.
