Coffee Expert Guesses Cheap vs. Expensive Coffee | Price Points | Epicurious

  • Published on Jun 21, 2018
  • In this episode of 'Price Points', Epicurious challenges coffee expert Dillon Edwards of Parlor Coffee to guess which coffee is more expensive. Edwards breaks down roasts (dark roast vs light roast), processing, freshness, varietals, and source. For each element, the connoisseur looks at and tests each coffee before guessing which coffee costs more. Once the prices are revealed, Edwards explains why a specific coffee costs more and dives into specifics on how each coffee is made.

    This is a great introduction to coffee tasting. I work with specialty coffee. I always love it when people always ask what the difference.(Not many do because they don't know what they're buying). Not their fault. However, they're often impressed after I demonstrate the taste test. It's quite humbling to see that the experts use the same test.

    So does a lot of the coffee he samples, that is considered better, taste more on par with tea compared to big brand names like Folgers?
    I have been looking to purchase something high-quality, smooth, and medium to dark roast for years ever since I had the best cup of coffee I've ever had at an old friend's house years ago, but not sure where to start. Maybe someone can give me some suggestions of what to buy as well as where to buy it?

    watching this from Europe where expensive commercial grade coffee costs half the price of those commercial grade coffee's in this video. Weird. Is there an inflation on coffee prices in the US or is it because we drink so much coffee that the costs are so different?

    I used to drink instant (ought to be) coffee and tasted good. Until I started drinking freshly roasted coffee, the former tasted awful. Now I'm drinking almost exclusively single origin medium roast daily, I can no longer take any dark roasted blend.

    Wow awesome video! Those prices though are through the roof. If you roast it yourself which is super easy to do in a pan you can get geisha, JBM, and some other amazing exotics for WAY cheaper. Some sites I really like are HomeRoastCoffee and Borman since they’re both locally owned for me here in wisco.

    Wow, if you think that $30 per lb. is a good deal - I guess we're spoiled here living in the major specialty coffee producing region in Brazil, since we generally can buy directly from producers and pay about $5 per lb. for excellent beans.

    When did EXPERTS become so young? I'd like to hear the "expert" pick the BEST of the two, and not the one he thinks is more expensive. I just don't believe he is an expert. Credentials?

    You compared wine to coffee, but actually it has been proven that, for example through blind tests, that:
    1) people don't like the most expensive wines as much as they like cheaper wines , even if they can correctly point out that the wine is more expensive;
    2) in many, many blind tests, experts couldn't tell the difference between cheap and expensive wines, or wouldn't submit to the test;
    3) In one experiment, they took one bottle of white wine, poured one glass, then added red coloring and poured it in another glass. Experts were saying the red colored glass was better and more expensive;
    4) the fact that you are told the wine is expensive triggers your brain into receiving more information from your taste buds, thus making the more expensive wine taste better.

    Edit: I should point out that there are actually a very small number of real experts who can identify wines very precisely, but this remains the exception.

    why is their coffee so expensive? The most expensive I can find in my area is around 12€/lb, and looks pretty much exactly like the 22$/lb he had as first sample. The dark roasted one looked like the 3€ trash coffee we got here.

    They didn't really show very many dark roasts at all, and since there are high quality dark roasts out there, I can't tell if he is just someone who prefers lighter roasts (he was clearly leaning towards only citrusy and juicy undertones) or it was something in the way they chose the products in the video. A little misleading, since the only dark roast in the video turned out to be the cheaper/poorer quality one.
