Age is not just a number. GGG was a monster in his prime. Thank you guys for the trilogy!!

    • Adriano Dane
      Adriano Dane Day ago

@Cosmic Guardian Nope. Not in this context is not. Age is at least two numbers. Your chronological age and your biological age. Chronological age is the one you count with birthday candles. Biological age is trickier to pin down. My man GGG has been in hundreds of wars, he is past his prime. Age....is NOT just a number.

You gotta respect GGG for going up in weight for the first time in his career at 40 years old to fight a prime Canelo again in a division where Canelo obliterated all other opposition. GGG took his best shots and still went the distance. Respect to both.

    • XznatiX
      XznatiX Day ago

@C You may be right. It's only my opinion and from seeing his recent fights I believe he grew as a fighter and is better. Still that doesnt mean he would defeat Mayweather .

    • C
      C Day ago

@XznatiX I doubt that because Canelo was already in his prime (or very close to being in his prime) when he fought Floyd. As I've already mentioned, Canelo had already successfully defended his title SIX TIMES before finally losing it to Floyd. Floyd, at 36 years of age, was WAY, WAY past his prime. Yet despite these facts, Floyd didn't simply defeat Canelo by a few points. He practically shut him out. He DOMINATED Canelo. He, literally, put on a boxing clinic. So if a 36 year old Floyd put on a clinic against Canelo, HOW IN THE WORLD would you think that a 26 or 28 year old Floyd, who was way faster than a 36 year old Floyd, could possibly lose to ANY version of Canelo?

    • XznatiX
      XznatiX Day ago

@C What i meant is that todays Canelo would have a better shot at taking prime Floyd

    • C
      C Day ago +1

@XznatiX You say that Canelo "would now have a much better shot at taking Floyd."
You do realize that Floyd is now 45 years of age, right? And Canelo is only 32 years of age. So your statement is a bit silly because I sure hope that a 32-year-old active, champion fighter can take a 45-year-old retired fighter.

Major respect to GGG. To be in there with a guy like Canelo at 40, and still put up a respectable effort is commendable. I will always feel bad for how he was robbed in the first fight and had his whole career altered because of it, but nevertheless, the guy is as solid as they come as a human being. Glad I got to witness this guy fight throughout the years. ✊🏽

Props to both guys. Canelo got a clear win and GGG honestly lost little to no stock, being in there against a prime Canelo at 40. Him being in there at that age, coming up in weight and never getting hurt says a lot about his toughness when you know Canelo has the power to take out elite guys at 168 in their prime.

Honestly Canelo needs some rest. He fought 4 times in a years calendar last year (3 undefeated champs inc.) and then decided to challenge the next champion at 175 after wiping 168 to become undisputed... then coming back a few months later to defend his titles. He deserves the rest. He’s done a tremendous amount for the sport recently.

Respect and tahnks to both fighters for completing the trilogy. Even though it was a very much needed battle to settle unfinished business, it want as captivating as it SHOULD have been. By taking such a long time to get here, it took away from the true fight that should have taken place over 4 years ago. Now we are in this situation where GGG is way out of his prime and should be retired while Caneleo had something more to fight for since his loss to Bivol. I am curious to hear what the main point and the opinion of true boxing fans as to what they believe of this enitre TRILOGY. Who do you think won each fight and why?

Watching this fight, I couldn't help but to imagine what the fight would look like if we had the GGG from Canelo v Golovkin 1. There were flashes of his old march you down and cut off the ring style, with the double and triple jab GGG is known for, but too little too late. GGG to me is one of the most underrated fighters of all time, a GOAT middleweight, but sadly not one of the all time goats because he didn't have the right competition in his prime. But his first performance against Canelo proves how dangerous he was in his prime and yes Canelo got better, but I don't think he or anyone could have beaten a prime GGG with Abel Sanchez in his corner. Canelo will go down as an all time great, but in their primes I know GGG was the better fighter. I'll never forget GGG eating a flush ko punch from Canelo, and Canelo looking defeated after GGG ignored it and led on like a terminator.

    • Californio
      Californio 3 days ago

GGG was a late bloomer who at 29 was still looking unpolished and getting dragged into a war with small 2nd tier fighter Ouma and he didn't step up his opposition until over 30. Going into the first fight GGG was the hyped favorite many people believed would destroy Canelo. The biggest mistake Canelo made in the first fight is showing GGG too much respect likely because he bought into the hype about his power. Additionally, Canelo was a different fighter then as more stationary backfoot counterpuncher. You're saying Canelo had a defeated expression in that fight because GGG was able to take his shots when he was actually emboldened as it went on because by the later rounds he was full blown standing and trading in the center of the ring with him. And in the rematch in response to team GGG's repeated demands for a Mexican style fight, he changed up his style and called their bluff by bringing the fight straight to GGG and beating him at his own game. The third fight was the first one in which GGG was the underdog but many still viewed him as a live dog who might pull a Marquez vs Pac, but he was reluctant to let his hands go likely because he wasn't interested in taking damage like the last fight and Canelo's talk of a KO got into his head-- despite the fact that the judges were looking to give GGG the fight.
And Canelo will be ranked higher among HOF'ers because he took more career risks than GGG who was reluctant to step outside of his comfort zone. Team GGG complained about lack of opposition willing to step up while claiming he'd fight anyone from 154-168 yet his team rejected fights like Lara because they didn't like his style and also said it's unfair to move up to 168 vs Ward, yet expected others to move up for him. And GGG spent the years post Canelo-GGG II handpicking. Canelo actually delivered as 154-175 champ including moving up as underdog to beat GGG at his own game.

Just rewatched the full fight. It was expected considering GGG’s age and inactivity. Canelo didn’t dominate GGG like how he dominated other 168 fighters, Smith, Caleb and BJS. Canelo managed to outworked him in the first half of the fight and GGG came back strong in the last few rounds. Fair performance for a 40 year old.

Those guys came to win and were taking more risks along with forcing Canelo to fight. However, GGG was looking to go rounds on the off chance Canelo gassed and he was able to catch him with something big. Canelo had an injured hand and was content banking in the rounds while also landing the bigger shots instead of trying to force a KO.

@Colin Morris I agree no one knock GGG down maybe till he became 50. But technically dominating means not brutally hurt him. Every round Canelo was the side of attack and I notice that GGG was feeling his shots. His body and eye language was different in previous fights. This time GGG was feeling the intensity.

First off mad respect to Canelo for giving GGG 3 fights recognized greatness and who he should be competing against to be the best!! truth is if Triple G was younger or the same age this would have been a much different contest the boxing world has been avoiding him his whole career GGG is one of the best I've ever seen

  • Manuel Di
    Manuel Di 10 days ago

I was excited when I saw GGG in the earlier rounds wanting to establish the jab. I thought that he wanted to outbox Canelo in the early rounds, until Canelo would have to come out and brawl. And then he would counter on Canelo coming in, and cause damage that way. But it didn't work! He did not outbox Canelo. It was the other way around. And that's why it was actually GGG that came out in the latter round, and made it more interesting. But he left it too late, cause Canelo was already established in the fight. But I'm yet to hear, why in round 9, when GGG had Canelo hurt, why didn't he go after him with more intense punching. I think if Lederman was interviewing GGG, he would have asked him that question.

Despite Canelo "winning" 2 of the trilogy; both fighters have never truly imposed on each other. They are both so strong, skillfull, determined and resilient that they have effectively cancelled out each other in all encounters. Victory has never been decisive.

Those extra 8 pounds must have done something to Golovkin. He's fought at 160 basically his entire career. And now at 40, going up in weight like that!? I mean, we should be able to tell that he didnt have enough energy. Same as Wilder when he put on pounds to fight Fury the 3rd time.

Respect for GGG a normal 40 year old boxer would have not made it through 4th round. But this guy is a true wonder of boxing. He gave Canelo all he could handle. I'm sure Canelo was thrilled when the fight was done. Both are great fighters.

  • William Clark

I love GGG and always will, but I think he's done. He's just noticeably slower than he was, even in the fights that he's winning (Murata, Szerameta). He was the best ticket money could buy for years. He's 40 now. I think it's over. I'm not judging him on this fight.
Honestly, I think both these guys are slowing down.
In my book this trilogy is 1-1-1.

@Phenom Facemob GGG won the first fight. Byrd's scorecard was literally a result of being legally blind. She said this herself. Floyd Mayweather even said GGG won that fight. Canelo ran the entire night and didn't actually box because he landed less shots than GGG who was coming forward. Landing more shots per round while coming forward is called winning. You can't win by landing less shots while backpedaling. Get real

In my opinion, GGG was undefeated in his teens, 20s and 30s, maybe with 1 draw. It took until his 40s for his first (genuine) loss. Never knocked down, never stopped, never KO'd. Canelo is a great champion too but he's lost 3 or 4 times in his prime years, although in fairness he did fight Floyd while GGG didn't.
