@Dragos The judges overvalued top position without attempts to do damage. Rounds 4 and 5, Francis landed less strikes than Gane even though he had more control time. Gane landed more strikes and had a 94% accuracy in 4th round for example, and that was the only round Francis got over 50% of his strikes to connect. Gane didn't have a single round where he landed under 58%.

Think on this: Francis came in the fight with messed up knees, he was extremely flat footed due to that, his biggest strength (boxing) was not effective anymore and he got pieced up for the first 2 rounds. Then he turns it around and dominates the person who should have been his biggest challenge, he wins an uncontested unanimous decision. And that’s while being really injured. Imagine him fighting 100% healthy, that’s flat scary!
He would have had better movement and caught Gane once which was what he needed.

I knew he was gonna grappl if he couldn't catch Gane. Francis' been grappling A LOT leading up to this fight, and he certainly showed he has the power to control Gane if he wished. Very impressive performance. I'm glad he won.

He threw plenty of strikes, very few landed and he gassed. A knee injury does not prevent you from throwing GNP in side control. He stalled because he was exhausted and in another league would have gotten a yellow card. Looked like Dada 5000. Gane was exhausted too, but at least he was trying submissions and looking for ways to finish the fight.

I think DC is right about the way the standup was going. Gane would've picked him apart at range for 25 minutes if Francis hadn't elected to grapple. Gane is way too technical of a striker to make any of the mistakes as Francis' past opponents. And Francis was visibly diminished after the first round when Gane decided to clinch early. The decision to wrestle was a safer bet than landing the hailmary.

Gane who has phenomenal fight IQ made one of the biggest blunders i've seen in a championship fight. He threw away the belt going for that submission when he had top control. Props to Francis though, he keeps on improving his game.

Game is one of the best rappers over 200. I'm not surprised that he went for a submission . Getting it would cement a win, and avoid going to a decision in a fight that could go either way. It's easy to ask why he didn't maintain his position, but it's hard to do so when Francis is trying to get a better position

Chael had a great live stream reaction after the fight last night on his channel. This wasn’t Ngannou vs Gane. This was Ngannou vs Dana White. It was clear that Dana believed he found the 1 guy outside of Jon Jones who could take the HW strap from Francis in Ciryl Gane. Gane was subsequently rushed through the ranks being given easy wins to cultivate his 10-0 resume to fast track him to the title match against Francis. Dana was putting all his eggs in Gane’s basket hoping he would get the win so he could have the leverage in contract negotiations with Francis moving forward. It clearly backfired on him in a big way, and he didn’t even bother to place the strap on Francis in the octagon after he won, nor did he even show up for the post PPV presser, which is unheard of for Dana White…. 🤣

One year without fighting in the UFC voids that champion clause. Dana doesn't have him locked down forever like some of these other fighters are if they quit and want to move on. The Ali act was created so sleazeball promoters couldn't screw them over with future fight contracts like the UFC does. It was unethical then and it is still unethical.

I think Gane did that mistake because Lopez told him between the 4th and the 5th that he was "clearly going to lose the fight" unless he tried something which I thought was really a clumsy attempt at reverse psychology at this stage of the fight. Cyril was losing, yes, but he was still in the fight and not that desperate althought being overpowered by Francis on the ground.

Pretty weird but still pretty impressive to see some variety, improvements, and most especially some decent ground game or grappling/wrestling from the champion Francis Ngannou although he just cruised onto a decision victory in the fight, unlike his explosive knockout win prediction at the pre-fight weigh-ins.
There's no shame in losing to the champion Ciryl Gane, there are still lots of room for learning from this defeat, improving or evolving, and bouncing back well from this loss towards another shot at the heavyweight gold.

Francis isn’t fighting anybody else until the contract is signed with the ufc, and if it doesn’t get signed then he is gone - the champions clause is scrapped because the total time limit on his contract ends in Dec 2022, and that end date isn’t extended by the clause - I thought maybe we might still get one fight from him, but the torn up knee will make it very easy for him to ride it out until December. We will see. Seems like it’s still kinda open for negotiations.
Someone needs to talk about the similarities between Ngannou and GSP.. If Ngannou falls in love with his wrestling the same way GSP did, don’t be surprised if he outwrestles Jon and decapitates him.. This was an injured Ngannou who showed that his fight IQ was higher than the guy they hyped as a Wizard with a higher IQ than Francis.

I loved how cryril stopped running and stood and fought Francis before taking the fight to the ground.
Winning by a five round unanimous decision is actually an accomplishment, considering the way that he won via take downs on a fluidly dangerous opponent who somewhat doesn't get taken down often. I was very impressed by his performance.

He got the job done. An injured leg has no business chasing about his opponent. Cyril was dancing around. Francis took the fight to him. What was he suppose to do. Run after him. Cyril like Adesanya fought out his range. Which is his style of fight. None of you lots can last a second in a cage but you all wanna down someone's victory.

That's because Gane keeps running around the ring while Francis keeps moving forward towards him the whole fight. So Francis realized the only way to win is to catch him.
After the first 2 rounds I said yep Gane is going to force Francis to fight his fight 5 rounds. Then Francis took control and used his grappling very good on his part.
He had a mcl acl injury Idc how technical ciryl was or appeared cuz if all that Francis clearly learned if he was at full strength I think he dominates this fight.

I’m a huge CG fan, and all I can see for him is potential. If his wrestling had been like 5% better he would have had the W over Francis. Going for the heel hook when in top control showed poor fight IQ. He will grow from this L and if there is a rematch with Francis im confident that he’ll win it decisively.
