I don't think it's the logo, it's the name! Supreme is a very good name. A pricey brand with a name that makes you feel 'supreme' AND it's used to flex. The perfect strategy.

I knew about only from Ricegum. So I had an idea what type of people wear it. The brand is just for flexing.

Authentic streetwear is about practicality and survival, it's getting dressed on a budget. Streetwear for me was wearing milsur boots with newspaper stuffing in the winter. There's nothing supreme about being broke.

conspicuous consumption, conspicuous sums it all. Only people whose happiness is dependent on what others see them own buy these products. It seems almost like a form of mind control.

Damn, I had this conversation about hype and scarcity marketing and limited edition drops when the Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson video came out about how they crashed Shopify and basically shut down all the websites when their collab came out. People don't understand how this is playing them into impulse-buying because it doesn't leave them time to think about the purchase they're about to make. And it leaves out lots of people. It's even worse when they "fake hype", and it's not really even limited edition, or selling out, but they only made a few.. like with the Nintendo Wii when it came out, or when a new iPhone drops. The hype becomes "who gets it first". Crashing servers or selling out capsule collections in seconds is a power move, it's like a free marketing stunt to show off status, preying on people's FOMO to make a quick buck. Also, I'm low-key impressed by the reference to Veblen, Hasan's right, his researchers DO make him look smart...!

I just don't understand why people want lots of shoes. I don't understand Why you don't just need one fancy pair for weddings and funerals, one pair of boots and two pairs of sturdy trainers. I might just be cheap but anytime people brag about shoes I just don't understand
