Jokic is having the best season by numbers, and I agree with Shaq. It’s an individual award not a team award, it’s not one players responsibility for how an entire team is doing. What is more valuable, a team to be in 3rd instead of 4th? Or a team to be in 6th instead of 15th?

Joel Embiid 965 points this season, 298 of them from the FT line which makes up 31% of his total points this season.

Nikola Jokic 1011 points this season, 163 of them from the FT line which makes up 16% of his total points.

    • David Chinh
      David Chinh 8 days ago

@Tong Zou Great question. Reigning MVPs are always considered to be in the race for MVP contention when they improve upon their individual statistics and keep their team in contention despite injuries to teammates who were integral to the team’s prior success.
Last year, Jokic was the best player on the team with the 3rd best record, this year he is continuing to play at an amazing level and overcoming his teammates injuries. Remember when I talked about those outliers? In Russell Westbrook’s MVP season, the Oklahoma City Thunder were a 6th seed. LeBron’s team is currently tied for 8th team in the Western Conference with the L.A. Clippers; a team who currently has their two best players out.

    • Tong Zou
      Tong Zou 8 days ago

@David Chinh so why is Jokic so high on the list even tho Nuggets are 6th seed?

  • Haks
    Haks 10 days ago +93

Jokic has the potential to be the new Tim Duncan, the guy who is incredibly skilled, goes unnoticed but consistently gets it done & is immensely appreciated by basketball heads who don't buy into only the hype. The organisation just has to find a way to build a spurs-like organisation as they did with Duncan, TP & Manu otherwise he'll be out of there. Personally, TD is in my top 4 all-time and the argument can be made that he had the most perfect career ever.

@Haks coming off the bench is a huge no ego thing you won't find a player like ginobli willing to sacrifice come off the bench. i don't think the nuggets will ever have the spurs mentality. and even when healthy i don't see the nuggets as constructed as a championship roster

    • Elijah M Pendergrass
Elijah M Pendergrass 5 days ago

Tim Duncan was first team defense for his whole career- so let’s relax a little bit. But I agree that nikola jokic fundamentals/all around game offensively is top tier.

    • Haks
      Haks 6 days ago

@A D I don’t mean the same type of players, I mean the culture aspect of being a championship organisation, team basketball, playing together and for each other, no egos, forget the hype because Nuggets don’t seem to be about that, trusting their leader(s) they have great talent that’s out right now. I think they have something great, they just need to all be healthy for us to really see what they can do when everyone’s at their best.

@Dejan Popovic 8 triple doubles as of last night's for Jokic this season so far, which he got before the clock hit 9 minutes left in the 3rd. One of those was also the fastest triple double ever in NBA history in just 14 minutes of game time, but Jokic rested for about 5 of those minutes, so call it a triple double in 9 minutes...

    • Jack L.
      Jack L. 8 days ago +2

@Damian Moreno KD is out of this conversation now, can't miss a month or you're out like last year showed. Also Murray and MPJ have missed most or all of the season, along with everyone from their 4th star in Gordon to deep onto their bench have all missed numerous games with injuries. Which other MVP candidate hasn't seen their #2 and #3 guys not play, while they starting lineup changed at least weekly due to injuries, while still setting efficency stats and Point/Rebound/Assist totals not seen in almost 50 years?

    • Jack L.
      Jack L. 8 days ago +1

@Chapos Shoota Nuggets are missing their 2nd and 3rd stars, every starter except Jokic has missed numerous games with injuries, their bench has also lost most of their guys for numerous games for injuries, and Jokic is still carrying them with the best efficiency rating in decades...

Giannis and Joker have these stats in roughly 32-33 minutes per game and they are really close in numbers. It's quite obvious that they contribute the most to their teams respectively, with Bucks having the greater record however. So yes, when 2 players are this close stat-wise, wins should play a role. + The fact that EVERY defense in the league is literally afraid of Giannis, offense too.

When you talk about MVP you should talk about everything. When you talk about Steph you gotta mention his gravity, on off numbers, when you talk about Jokic you have to mention his advanced stats, efficiency, on-off numbers, when Jokic plays Nuggets are on pace to win 63 games and when he's on the bench the Nuggets play as an 11 win team.

Only Russell Westbrook in the history of the NBA from the 6th seed has won MVP average a triple double stat padding on a bad team. Jokic is not gonna do it unless he wins more games. His stats are good but not triple double good. When Giannis had the highest PER he had the best record in the nba twice when he won back-to-back MVPs.

Only 1-6 going to play off. 7th and 8th seed can miss the play off, just like Warriors missed last year. Just like Shaq, you should inform yourself about rules. If we go by that logic LBJ should be included in MVP race and I want Lakers to miss the play off.

If the worst player in the NBA plays against amateurs he would score 100 POINTS and that doesnt mean he is better then WILT or JORDAN.
      GOT IT?

That maximum effort narrative about Westbrook is so untrue, defence and off ball play are part of the game and I don't see him make any effort when he doesn't have the ball. MVP criteria is clear but Jokic is definitely disrespected, sadly I think it'll be like Giannis and he'll still be disrespected after winning a title

There are legitimately 6-8 players who can be considered for MVP this year.
Giannis, Steph, KD, Joker, Embiid, Derozan, Lebron.

    • Hemant Jain
      Hemant Jain 8 days ago

LeBron missed too much time so I would replace him with Morant. I think Joker and Giannis should be top two and then Curry given who they haven't had due to injuries on their team. KD has Harden. Derozan had a stacked starting 5 right now and Embid also missed too much time. Consistency is important not just getting hot for the last month or so. I would put Giannis over Joker given record so both record and numbers count. I put Joker over Curry since you need to be a two way player adding to your how important you are but Curry is having an amazing year with 2nd and 3rd best players out with Klay just coming back which is why they are my top 3. He gets doubled most of the game and is still getting past 27 points. He more important than KD and Demar who don't handle the ball as much.

MVP is a player award but the value is calculated from the team perspective. That's why it's such an important award. The value is derived from the team's SUCCESS. That's why wins matter.

Michael Jordan and Westbrook are the only two players that won without having a top-four seed team. Westbrook averaged a triple-double. Michael Jordan average 35 points per game and won defensive player of the year

I would argue a great player on a six seed is more valuable to their team then a great player on a one seed. That one seed would make the playoffs with or without that player in most cases, meanwhile the six seed is being dragged to the playoffs by that one good player making them more valuable

Idk I think it just means there are exceptions to the rule. Westbrook had a historic season on a team that probably wasn't going to win without him. I think that fits his definition of MVP.

@V Beard yea with less talent than the miami heat and the Boston celtics also dwights magic.when he was defensive player of the year.. The bulls didnt have as much talent and d rose should have won that.. I still dont know of you understand what im saying here talent is key in my eyes if you have 3 or more spots filled in your starting lineup with all stars.yes the team with less.all stars and around the same amount of wins. im voting for team 2 and there best player he has less to work with while still putting up great # and good wins.. Everyone is trying to make this soley about wins.. When thats not what the award is

    • V Beard
      V Beard 9 days ago

@Nm Jayo DRose and the Bulls were also the top seed in the East that year so winning played a bigger role than numbers

See everyone here has to actually understand my point or your arguements you state arent valid to me..yes jokic won last year i think he did deserve it yes it led to winning.. But its not like he has 3 superstar players with him last year he had good role players under him.... Years before that it was giannis. James harden and russel won there mvp soley based on stats they werent the most winming teams those 2 years..the awards is flawed man..go back in history it was about the points not the wins they somehow changed it over the years but kept the old definition

    • V Beard
      V Beard 9 days ago

@Chris Valentine How? He's second in defensive BPM, is 4th in most contested shots in the league and his opponents shoot 7% less on FGs when he's guarding them. Nuggets defense is one of the best in the league with him on court and is THE worst when he's off the court. Don't go along with the stereotype. Man deserves all defense this year

@BST FITNESS Oh, and another thing you got wrong - PJ Tucker was in as the defensive specialist.

I think wins matter to an extent.
You don't have to be the 1st or 2nd seed to win MVP. Westbrook was a great example. He had the stats but his team was the 5th or 6th seed in the west.

I personally feel Joel Embid should be MVP. He's carrying the 76ers to success. If he left and they kept Simmons with this roster I think they're fighting for the play in game. Embid is more valuable to his team then any other player.
