В апреле 1992 года перед АМО ЗИЛ, а в последующем перед АО "Вездеход-ГВА", Министерством по чрезвычайным ситуациям России была поставлена задача по созданию специальных аварийно-спасательных машин (АСМ) для оснащения аварийно-спасательных формирований МЧС России (АСФ). Техническое задание на опытно-конструкторскую работу "Разработка и изготовление специальных машин для оснащения аварийно-спасательных формирований" утверждено Первым заместителем председателя ГКЧС России 29 апреля 1992г. (Peг.№ И. 37.105.57186-92). Предшествующий опыт работы по ликвидации последствий аварий техногенного и природного характера показал, что районы выполнения аварийно-спасателъных работ в большей части характеризуются полным или частичным отсутствием дорог для перехода к месту происшествия. Поэтому применение многоцелевых армейских полноприводных автомобилей высокой проходимости (далее АВП) в качестве аварийно-спасательных не может быть эффективным из-за недостаточной их проходимости. Возникла необходимость в новых технических средствах высокой проходимости в качестве базы для создания АСМ. Было решено использовать разработки СКБ АМО ЗИЛ в части создания поисково-эвакуационных машин для обеспечения космических полетов. К этому времени комплекс поисково-эвакуационных машин "490" уже в течении нескольких лет успешно использовался в авиационной поисково-спасательной службе ВВС МО. Разработанные ОАО «Вездеход-ГВА» при ЗиЛе автомобили высокой проходимости ЗиЛ-4972 и ЗиЛ-497205 начиная с 1995 года выпускаются на Правдинском заводе радиорелейной аппаратуры (Нижегородская обл.). Оба внедорожника имеют унифицированные двигатель и капот, а также ходовую часть, которая во многом схожа с ходовой частью «Синей птицы»: трансмиссия выполнена по схеме с бортовой раздачей мощности, усилие передается к колесам каждого борта, которые имеют жесткую кинематическую связь между собой. Подвеска всех колес ЗиЛ-4972 и ЗиЛ-497205 - независимая торсионная, первая и третья пары колес сделаны поворотными. Давление воздуха в шинах может регулироваться от 0,3 до 3,0 кг/см2. Минимальное удельное давление шин на почву - 0,4 кг/см2 при минимальном давлении в шинах. Электрооборудование - комбинированное 12 в и 24 в. Главное различие между двумя модификациями - в длине заимствованной у ЗиЛ-4331 кабины. На ЗиЛ-4972 она устанавливается без изменений, а на ЗиЛ-497205 - в удлиненном виде, со вторым рядом сидений на четыре человека. Подвеска (тип) независимая торсионная для всех колес Рулевое управление (тип) с двумя гидроусилителями (для передних и задних колес) Шины (тип) 16.00 - 20, мод. ИЯ - 333, с регулируемым давлением от 0,5 до 3,0 кг/см. Максимальный грузовой момент кранового манипулятора - 8,9 тм. В настоящее время эти авиатранспортабельные вездеходы (Ил-76, Ми-26) используются в подразделениях МЧС и ГО, РАО "ЕС России", Министерства путей сообщения, в нефтегазовом комплексе при аварийно-спасательных, восстановительных работах и для доставки ремонтных, спасательных групп и спецоборудования в условиях бездорожья. Автомобили могут эксплуатироваться в любых климатических условиях.
