Cockpit Voice Recorder - Delta Airlines Flight 1141 Crash || Delta Air Lines Flight 1141 was a flight that flew from Jackson to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Salt Lake City International Airport in Salt Lake City, Utah. On August 31, 1988, Flight 1141 crashed after takeoff from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Two of the seven crew members and twelve of the 101 passengers on board lost their lives. On this occasion, the aircraft was a Boeing 727 Advanced, registration number N473DA. It was delivered in 1973, the 992nd Boeing 727 to be delivered. Two facts were primarily blamed for the tragedy of flight 1141: The crew had not ensured that the wings flaps were properly positioned for take-off, and the planes unprepared take-off horn was not functioning. As a result, the plane struck a nearby object immediately after taking off, causing the accident. In an unexpected sequel to the investigation, the broadcast of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) by the media demonstrating why the crew mistakenly mispositioned the flaps, provoked such an outcry by pilots, that subsequent releases of CVR data are protected by law and are carefully vetted by the NTSB. FAA regulations require a sterile cockpit before takeoff. This means there is to be no conversation outside of talk pertaining to the plane and pending flight. (For example, reviewing Pre-Takeoff checklists.) The CVR tapes recorded extensive talk about the pilots mixed beverages and the dating habits of the flight attendants. After impact, the aircraft broke into two peices and skidded to a stop some four thousand feet from the end of the runway. As evacuation procedures were begun, a fire broke out near the fuel lines to the engines in the rear of the aircraft. Out of the 108 passengers and crew aboard, 14 did not live to tell their story. The Captain was the last person to leave the aircraft alive, removed some 45 minutes after the accident.

Allen Iverson 2001 NBA Final Game 5 vs Kobe Bryant Lakers || The Los Angeles Lakers drove a stake into the heart of the Philadelphia 76ers and staked their claim as the NBAs next dynasty. Led by Shaquille ONeal, the Lakers won their second straight title with a 108-96 victory in Game Five of the NBA Finals, completing the greatest postseason run in league history. "A dream come true," ONeal said. "I always knew we could do it, especially after the first one last year. I just knew that if we did what we were supposed to do that we could get it done." "Team Shaq" has gone back-to-back, claiming its 13th championship. The Lakers did it by going 15-1, with the lone loss coming in overtime against the 76ers in the opener of this series. That ended a 19-game winning streak, but ONeal quickly restored order, powering the Lakers to four straight wins as he claimed his second straight NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award. "The first championship was just to get the monkey off my back," ONeal said. "The ones that I get from now on will just be to stamp my name in history -- as far as for myself, as far as for whatever team Im on." "It was an unbelievable run for us in the playoffs," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who won his eighth championship, one shy of the legendary Red Auerbach. "Their concentration was incredible during this period." ONeal collected 29 points and 13 rebounds in the clincher. He manhandled Defensive Player of the Year Dikembe Mutombo, averaging 33 points, 15.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocks in the series. "His defense is really, I think, one of the keys for us winning," Jackson said. "He was a presence inside, both offensively and defensively." ONeals impact was undeniable. Not only was he an unstoppable post presence, his teammates made a record 36-of-75 3-pointers playing off him. "Ive never seen a player better in my life," 76ers coach Larry Brown said. "I mean that." "Im drunk," ONeal said as he entered the interview room. "A lotta champagne." It was a lot of ONeal, but it wasnt all him. It only seemed that way. Philadelphia native Kobe Bryant, -- heavily booed in his hometown throughout the series -- silenced this city with something less than brotherly love. Bryant had 26 points and 12 rebounds, shaking off a poor first half. He averaged 24.6 points and was outstanding in each of LAs four wins, perfectly complementing ONeal -- which was not always the case during the season. "Its a thing in the past," Bryant said. "Well do our best to try to keep a team effort, keep a community. Hopefully, we wont have to go through what we went through this year, and I dont think we will." The Lakers did not exactly bury the 76ers. Following the script of the entire series, they allowed a huge lead to dwindle in the fourth quarter before two 3-pointers by Derek Fisher served as dual daggers to the heart the Sixers displayed to the very end. NBA MVP Allen Iverson scored 37 points despite suffering another injury, this one to his ribs. He averaged 35.6 points in his first Finals and allowed a basketball-crazed city to believe it could topple Tinseltown. "Allen told me he thought he cracked some ribs," Brown said. "They X-rayed it, I dont know, they didnt find that. Its what that kids about. He had a phenomenal year. "And I think being in this environment on this stage, people really recognize what an unbelievable competitor he is and what a great player." Iversons competitive spirit got the best of him. He walked off the court as the buzzer sounded, refusing to shake hands. He also blew off the postgame media session when he saw he had to wait for Bryant. But the "Little Guy" and a big heart were nowhere near enough for the Sixers, who struggled on offense and saw their dogged defense decimated by a dynasty. "They got our attention during the course of this series," said Jackson. Injury-infiltrated Philadelphia fought hard in every game, but playing uphill took its toll and the Sixers were pushed back by the 7-2, 330-pound ONeal, a mountain of a man and the NBAs king of the hill. "It may not seem like Im happy on my face," ONeal said in the interview room. "Im also greedy and Im not done." "Shaq has got more in him," Jackson said. "I expect him to have more than two championships before hes finished with this game." Rick Fox scored 20 points for the Lakers and Fisher added 18, all on 3-pointers. LA made 12-of-17 from the arc, devastating the double-teams the Sixers ran at ONeal. Philadelphias Tyrone Hill had his best postseason game with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Mutombo added 13 and 11 before fouling out and Eric Snow had 13 and 12 assists. "They came out and proved to the world that they were a defending champion," Mutombo said. Bryant scored seven quick points early in the final period to give the Lakers a 92-74 lead. But the Sixers would not allow any early celebration, putting together another of their patented pushes. Hills jumper made it 93-84 with 5:24 to play but Fisher drilled a 3-pointer. Mutombo fouled out with 3:41 left, but Philadelphia kept coming as Hills three-point play cut the deficit to 100-92 with 1:51 to go. Snows free throw got it a point closer, but Fisher made another from the arc to seal it with 51 seconds left. Brown pulled his weary warriors off the floor to a standing ovation that lasted until the final horn as tears welled in Iversons eyes. Right before tip-off, the video scoreboard showed a hilarious cartoon that depicted ONeal as a building-crushing monster before Iverson emerged as "Underdog" to save the day. That got the crowd going and Snows return to the starting lineup sparked the Sixers to their first opening-quarter lead of the series, 27-24. Mutombo held ONeal relatively in check, Snow ran the offense and Iverson scored 11 points. Iverson also collected three fouls, going hard to the floor after a collision with Bryant with 42 seconds to go. He began the second quarter on the bench with an ice pack on his right side and spent the early part of the period trying to stretch it out while missing three straight shots. Meanwhile, ONeal and the Lakers found some rhythm. Robert Horry made his seventh straight 3-pointer to pull LA into a 29-29 tie and ONeal scored eight points in less than three minutes, including a short jumper that gave the Lakers the lead for good at 36-34 with 7:57 remaining. ONeal dropped in an alley-oop pass from Fox and Bryant sank a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 49-40 with 3:43 left before Iverson found his stroke again. He scored six quick points to get the Sixers back in it. The Lakers led 52-48 at halftime behind 17 points by ONeal and six 3-pointers. Iverson scored 19 points. Bryant, who shot 2-of-10 in the first half, got untracked as the Lakers widened the gap in a foul-filled third quarter. He scored eight points and set a tone by going to the basket and attacking the offensive boards. ONeal and Matt Geiger had a staredown and received technical fouls. Bryant heard the "Kobe (stinks)" chants once again, but a 3-pointer by Fisher silenced the crowd and gave LA a 78-66 advantage with 2:24 to play. The Lakers led 83-68 entering the final period.

Miller lost Ron Harper as he curled around a series of picks and bumped aside Michael Jordan at the top of the circle before taking the inbound pass from McKey and burying the game-winner from the right wing. "We designed the play for Reggie," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "I didnt think he was going to as wide open as he was. He was wide open. I knew he was going to make it." The Bulls had one last chance, but Jordan, who scored 28 points, saw his double-pump 25-foot banker rattle in and out as the horn sounded, completing an erratic final three minutes for the two-time defending NBA champions. "Michael got a look and a shot that scared me," Pacers forward Antonio Davis said. "He double- and triple-clutched and I said theres no way - not even for him." But a lot of things surprised me today." Chicago had some tough breaks with the calls down the stretch. One of those places is Somalia. After many years without ANY central government in the Horn-Of-Africa country Somalia, a calm moment and a ray of hope for a peaceful future came to Somalia, brought by the Islamic Courts, Somali church folks, not terrorists by everyones estimate—everyone except the US government, that is. The Islamic Courts ran out the warlords, opened the port, established order, ended the violence, made sure relief aid got to the people, and mobilized a large portion of society to join in on the effort to rehabilitate Somalia, with plans to reopen schools, hospitals and provide all the support networks needed for a functioning society. Rampant crime and the rule of the gun disappeared, and most Somalis seemed to breathe a sigh of relief after so many harsh years of chaos. Some of the old warlords did a flanking maneuver, though, and got themselves appointed as a "government in exile," and now they are back, not as war-lords this time, but as the "internationally recognized government." They arrived with the tanks and planes of the Ethiopian Army, the historical enemy of Somalia. They were also backed not just politically by the US but backed by US military firepower as well. When the heavily armed and mechanized Ethiopians ran right over the unfunded volunteers of the Islamic Courts, the US established a naval blockade to keep the leaders of the Islamic Courts from escaping the Ethiopian clutches. Then, in an even more blatant move, US airpower struck several Somali villages, killing many. The aircraft used, the AC130 was developed during the US War against Viet Nam, and was nicknamed then "Puff the Magic Dragon." It is not used for surgical strikes, but for putting a massive amount of firepower into a small area. I remember well that back then it was said that in a three second burst "Puff" could fill an area the size of a football field with one big round in every square inch. Who knows what it is capable of now, but when used against a village, this sort of weapon doesnt make friends, it makes a lot of dead civilians. Meanwhile, Warlords and criminals rule the street in Mogadishu, the historic capital of Somalia, and life for the people has descended once again into hell. With this background in mind, "Indymedia Presents" this week takes on the question of Somalia. First we present a piece made by PepperSpray Collective member Mahdy Maaweel, a Somali-American film maker and producer of "Somalisan TV" here in Seattle. The American Somali community has been holding demonstrations in various places around the country protesting against the invasion of Somalia. There has been almost no media attention to their pleas. Most Americans dont even know that their government is shooting things up in Somalia, so in covering this issue we feel we are once again giving voice to those the corporate media would leave voiceless. To prove the points being made in that first piece, we finish the show with a piece made by the United Nations in the early stages of the Ethiopian invasion. As Maaweel says to the camera, as you watch the UN report, remember that it was the UN that said over and over again that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. To paraphrase an old blues song, who you gonna believe, George Bush or your damn lying eyes?
