A study of campaign coverage found the media took a sharper look at Barack Obama the week after "Saturday Night Live" spoofed journalists enthralled by his candidacy. The NBC comedy show on Feb. 23 opened with a mock debate where journalists were rough on Hillary Clinton while being starry-eyed about Obama. It matched complaints the Clinton campaign had made — and she even referenced the comedy skit during a real debate last week. During the week, Obama was the dominant person in 69 percent of presidential campaign stories, according to a study by Project for Excellence in Journalism. Thats the biggest percentage one candidate had received in any week this year. Many of the stories took a tough look at Obama, such as a Feb. 25 ABC "World News" study on his Illinois legislative record and a "CBS Evening News" report on his career three nights later. Its hard to say whether "SNL" acted as a de-facto assignment editor, since some of the stories were probably being prepared before the NBC show aired, but it did seem to crystallize a thought that had been percolating, said Mark Jurkowitz, the projects associate director. "There were a lot of factors at play," Jurkowitz said. "But theres no question the skit, if nothing else, was perfectly timed." Obamas April 06, 2008 9:49 AM In Eugene, Ore., Saturday. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., attempted to change the measure by which anyone might assess who criticized the Iraq war first, her or Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., by saying those keeping records should start in January 2005, when Obama joined the Senate. (A measure that conveniently avoids her October 2002 vote to authorize use of force against Iraq at a time that Obama was speaking out against the war.) She claimed that using that measure, she criticized the war in Iraq before Obama did. But Clintons claim was false. Clinton on Saturday told Oregonians, "when Sen. Obama came to the Senate he and I have voted exactly the same except for one vote. And that happens to be the facts. We both voted against early deadlines. I actually starting criticizing the war in Iraq before he did." Its an odd way to measure opposition to the war -- comparing who gave the first criticism of the war in Iraq starting in January 2005, ignoring Obamas opposition to the war throughout 2003 and 2004. (And Clintons vote for it.) But even if one were to employ this "Start Counting in January 2005" measurement, Clinton did not criticize the war in Iraq first. Scrambling to support their bosss claim, Clinton campaign officials pointed to a paper statement Clinton issued on Jan. 26, 2005, explaining her vote to confirm Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State. "The Administration and Defense Departments Iraq policy has been, by any reasonable measure, riddled with errors, misstatements and misjudgments," the January 2005 Clinton statement said. "From the beginning of the Iraqi war, we were inadequately prepared for the aftermath of the invasion with too few troops and an inadequate plan to stabilize Iraq." But Obama offered criticisms of the war in Iraq eight days before that, directly to Rice, in his very first meeting as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jan. 18. Obama pushed Rice on her answers to previous questioners regarding the effectiveness of Iraqi troops, and he criticized the administration for conveying a never-ending commitment to a US troop presence in Iraq. * The Bloomington, Ill., Pantagraph reported that during a town hall meeting, asked about the Iraq war, "Obama said poor planning by the Bush administration has left Iraq woefully incapable of handling its own security. He expressed hope that more intensive training will be provided for Iraqi forces, saying such measures could allow most American troops to return home next year. While Obama said the recent Iraqi election is an encouraging sign for democracy, he questioned Bushs rationale for the Iraq invasion. I didnt see the weapons of mass destruction at the time, I didnt think there was an imminent threat from Saddam Hussein." Clinton made this latest questionable claim the same day that she came under fire for repeatedly telling a story that turned out not to be true about a poor pregnant woman losing her baby and her own life after being denied hospital treatment because she couldnt afford a $100 fee. The New York Times discovered that the woman in question was never denied treatment, and that she did have insurance. "We implore the Clinton campaign to immediately desist from repeating this story," said a representative of the hospital. The Clinton campaign said that the senator had been told the story by a sheriffs deputy, and had not been able to fully check its accuracy. "We did try but were not able to fully vet it," Clinton campaign spokesman Mo Elleithee said. "If the hospital claims it did not happen that way, we respect that." This latest incident also comes less than two weeks after Clinton had to back off a description of a plane landing during a 1996 trip to Bosnia that she had claimed was under sniper fire. Video evidence surfaced proving that claim false and Clinton admitted that she "misspoke." It is always the safe candidate of opposition of interest. It is always about getting Democrats elected. Not successfully much of the time (think Francine Busby, Kucinich), but trying and pushing the edge of what is possible. The problem with any of these is that campaign politics is always an edifice or scaffolding built around the strengths and weaknesses of an established politician, or one that needs a mythology , or an advertising/marketing/ persuading effort being invented or reinvented. We have some good people that are just not good enough or likeable enough, or connected enough with the elites to be vetted and declared the winners. And we have barely 50% of the voting public to decide their fate after a brief advertising campaign and message implanting. The Obama stuff reminds me of the McGovern stuff back in 1972. Everything you wished for might be happening with a kind and decent man like (fill in the blank). He was a Food for Peace administrator, and spoke to what a lot of people needed to hear. He was also an insurgent, outside candidate. the best thing was reforming the old rules of the Party about democracy inside and getting better quality people to survive weeding out. The general election was a rout. What did the Democrats learn from that debacle? I believe the ability of HRC as a leader, strategist, executive and administrator are huge strengths that are far superior to other candidates running on either side. And the mess she will inherit on taking office will challenge them all fully for the entirety of her terms. her public appearances project calmness and confidence. That might be her most "winning" features. There is a huge negative debt built up over the years. Tearing down democrats, gutting every decent thing that government can do, replacing government competence with privatized shell companies to do the work (badly) with a fraction of the employees that agencies used to do properly and get done and be accountable for. The attack on WJC and then HRC is an attempt to make government irrelevant and the corporate world the answer to every problem. The justification for it was the need to have private groups benefit from profit taking out of all missions the people formerly shared. The hatred and destruction of the commons. The Clintons were the target but burying abilities of government to help and not be a burden on ordinary people was the aim all along of the Right Wingers and Republican ideologists. Reversing years of malign neglect, the trashing of agencies that supported Americans in many spheres, be it health or education is somrthing the Repubs do not want. the worst of them who have done criminal things are worried about genuine investigations, prosecutions and haqving to disgorge many ill gotten gains (like the profiteering bunch in Iraq and elsewhere. Clinton is feared as someone who might demand payback, both literally and figuratively. It is far past time it happened.

The Clintons were the target but burying abilities of government to help and not be a burden on ordinary people was the aim all along of the Right Wingers and Republican ideologists. Reversing years of malign neglect, the trashing of agencies that supported Americans in many spheres, be it health or education is somrthing the Repubs do not want. the worst of them who have done criminal things are worried about genuine investigations, prosecutions and haqving to disgorge many ill gotten gains (like the profiteering bunch in Iraq and elsewhere. Clinton is feared as someone who might demand payback, both literally and figuratively. It is far past time it happened.
