Grand Prix(1988) Alex Higgins v Rex Williams (Part 1) || This quarter-final match sees Alex take on seven times world billiard champion and WPBSA chairman Rex Williams.Williams, an able and compentent snooker player from the 1950s onward,enjoyed a surge of form during the mid-late 1980s.He reached numerous quarter-finals,a couple of semi-finals and,on one occasion,the final of the 1986 Rothmans Grand Prix, in which he lost 10-6 to Jimmy White.(Rexs semi-final against Neal Foulds was an absolute cracker:the veteran won 9-8.)Williams re-entered the top 16 from 1986-1988 on the strength of these consistent results. Michael Jordan and the Jordanaires || Watch Mike and the rest of the Chicago Bulls dominate the competion in this highlight reel. Widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, he became one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was instrumental in popularizing the NBA (National Basketball Association) around the world in the 1980s and 1990s. After a standout career at the University of North Carolina, Jordan joined the NBAs Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as one of the stars of the league, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the foul line at Slam Dunk Contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness." He also gained a reputation as one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". Though Jordan abruptly left the NBA in October 1993 to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998). His 1995--96 Bulls team won an NBA record 72 regular season games. Jordan retired for a second time in 1999, but he returned for two more NBA seasons as a member of the Washington Wizards from 2001 to 2003. Jordans individual accolades and accomplishments include five NBA MVP (Most Valuable Player) awards, ten All-NBA First Team designations, nine All-Defensive First Team honors, fourteen NBA All-Star game appearances, ten scoring titles, three stealing titles, and the 1988 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award. He holds the NBA record for highest career regular season scoring average with 30.1 points per game, as well as averaging a record 33.4 points per game in the playoffs. In 1999, he was named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by ESPN, and was second to Babe Ruth on the Associated Presss list of athletes of the century. Jordan is also noted for his product endorsements. He fueled the success of Nikes Air Jordan sneakers, which were introduced in 1985 and remain popular today. Jordan also starred in the 1996 feature film Space Jam. He is currently a part-owner and Managing Member of Basketball Operations of the Charlotte Bobcats, which reside in his home state of North Carolina.

Darryl Dawkins (born January 11, 1957 in Orlando, Florida) is a former professional basketball player, most noted for his days with the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, although he also played briefly for the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz late in his career. *Biography Without Darryl Dawkins, the NBA would have been a whole lot less fun. Dawkins was an enormous man who skipped college for the NBA, broke backboards, named his dunks, dreamed up imaginary planets, played some darn good basketball, and generally spent a career as one of the most enigmatic and entertaining players in the game. The 6-foot-11, 252-pound Dawkins was terrifically strong, could run the floor, had a nice jumper, and could rebound and block shots. He averaged double figures in scoring nine times in his 14 years in the NBA, often ranking among the league leaders in field-goal percentage. He also played in the NBA Finals three times as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. On the flip side, Dawkins set an NBA record for fouls in a season (386 in 1983--84), and he never quite lived up to the expectations that had been heaped upon him when he was drafted out of high school. Hoping to follow in Malones footsteps, the 18-year-old Dawkins renounced his college eligibility and applied for the 1975 NBA Draft as a hardship candidate. The Philadelphia 76ers made him the fifth overall pick, behind David Thompson, Dave Meyers, Marvin Webster, and Alvan Adams. With his size, speed, and touch, Dawkins was expected to take over the league. But he handled the expectations in typical fashion. In 1977--78 Dawkins finally found a regular role, coming off the bench for nearly 25 minutes per game. Now a robust 20 years old, he averaged 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds and ranked second in the league in field-goal percentage at .575. With a club that included Julius Erving, George McGinnis, Lloyd Free, and Doug Collins, the Sixers made another solid postseason run, advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals before losing to the Washington Bullets in six games. Prior to the 1978--79 season Philadelphia traded McGinnis to the Denver Nuggets for Bobby Jones and Ralph Simpson. The move was made in part to clear space for Dawkins on the Sixers front line, which also included 6-foot-11 Caldwell Jones. Over the next three seasons Dawkins and Caldwell Jones split time at the center and power forward positions, and Dawkins had the most productive stretch of his career. In 1979--80 he averaged 14.7 points and a career-high 8.7 rebounds, helping the Sixers back to the NBA Finals, which they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. In a game against the Kansas City Kings in November 1979 Dawkins threw down such a massive dunk that the backboard shattered into a thousand tiny shards, sending the Kings Bill Robinzine ducking for cover and amazing a nation of fans. Three weeks later he did it again. A few days after that the NBA ruled that breaking a backboard was an offense that would result in a fine and suspension. Dawkins named the backboard-breaking dunk "Chocolate Thunder Flying, Robinzine Crying, Teeth Shaking, Glass Breaking, Rump Roasting, Bun Toasting, Wham, Bam, Glass Breaker I Am Jam." He named other dunks as well: the Rim Wrecker, the Go-Rilla, the Look Out Below, the In-Your-Face Disgrace, the Cover Your Head, the Yo-Mama, and the Spine-Chiller Supreme. The 76ers also kept a separate column on the stat sheet for Dawkinss self-created nicknames: "Sir Slam," "Double D," and "Chocolate Thunder." Also, he claimed to be an alien from planet Lovetron where he spent off-season practicing "interplanetary funkmanship" and where his girlfriend Juicy Lucy still lived. The 76ers suffered another postseason disappointment in 1982 when they reached the Finals but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. Frustrated with the teams inability to handle Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Sixers management began to shake up the center position. First Philadelphia traded Dawkins, who missed nearly half of the 1981--82 campaign with injuries, to the New Jersey Nets for a first-round draft pick. Then the Sixers sent Caldwell Jones and a first-round pick to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Moses Malone. At age 25 Dawkins joined a Nets club that included Albert King, Buck Williams, and Otis Birdsong. He had two productive seasons in a Nets uniform before injuries destroyed the rest of his career. In 1982--83 Dawkins averaged 12.0 points and shot .599 from the floor, ranking third in the league in field-goal percentage behind Gilmore and Steve Johnson. The next season he poured in a career-high 16.8 points per game on .593 field-goal shooting and grabbed 6.7 rebounds per contest. Dawkins also set a dubious NBA record that year when he committed 386 personal fouls for the season.

Both Magic and Bird would enter the NBA in the fall of 1979, and the rivalry between them and their teams (respectively, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics) was a major factor in the leagues renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s. Brookside Close Tour, 9th June 2007 || A tour around a deserted Brookside Close. The houses were sold to developers about two years ago and the insides have been completely gutted yet no work has taken place so far this year. The gardens are being looked after and thats about it. FROM WIKIPEDIA: The Rolls Royce of Soaps With the obvious popularity of the Grant family, many storylines were geared around Bobby and Sheilas turbulent marriage for most of the 1980s. Bobbys short-temper and frequent visits to Union picket lines opposite Sheilas staunch catholic faith and family values all served to be compelling viewing for many viewers, as did the antics of their popular older children Barry (Paul Usher), Karen (Shelagh OHara), and Damon (Simon OBrien). They were joined by Clare later in the mid-1980s in a thoughtful storyline where Sheila and Bobby dealt with parenthood later on in life. 1985 was a pivotal year for Brookside with the arrival of its longest-running and most well-known family, the Corkhills. The first generation of Corkhills to descend on the Close were Billy (John McArdle) and Doreen (Kate Fitzgerald) who moved into Number 10 with their children Rod (Jason Hope) and Tracy (Justine Kerrigan) along with a multitude of marital problems and debt. A favourite scene with fans occurred in 1987. Doreen and Billys crumbling marriage reached breaking point after Doreen admitted to Billy she had been sexually propositioned in return to pay off the familys spiralling debts. With fierce and tremendous rage, Billy jumped into his brown Triumph Acclaim and aggressively sped over all his neighbours gardens! Not only did this satisfy Billys utter marital frustrations, but it also served as revenge to the rest of the residents of the Close who had driven over his garden to avoid a huge hole that had appeared in the middle of the Brookside Close access road! Mid 1985 Brookside achieved its biggest viewing figures of the eighties with the infamous Number 7 Siege. This was a heavy handed but powerful plot that intended to highlight the possible dangers of Care in the Community, a controversial parliamentary scheme introduced in the early 1980s where previously hospitalised mentally ill people were treated at home. The extreme and hard-hitting storyline was watched by 7.5 million people, an incredible achievement for Britains newest TV channel, still only in its third year. Number 7 Brookside Close was home to three young nurses; Pat Hancock (David Easter), Sandra Maghie (Sheila Greer) and Kate Moses (Sharon Rossita), who rented the property from Harry Cross. Through their nursing, they encountered the seemingly harmless and gentle giant John Clarke (Robert Pugh), whose elderly Mother eventually died (of natural causes) in Hospital, under their care. Gradually, Johns instability grew into insanity and he was unable to cope with the death of his Mum with absolutely devastating consequences. He forced his way into Number 7, armed with a sawn-off shot gun and ready to avenge his Mothers death. He violently held the three nurses hostage for several days in a claustrophic and gripping 3 episode run with Brookside Close dramatically sealed off and surrounded by armed police! The siege culminated in a terrifying shoot-out resulting in the shocking death of Kate followed by Johns subsequent suicide. Although some critics howled at the unlikely plot-premise (former Daily Mail critic Hilary Kingsley described it as ludicrous in her book Soap Box), these were well produced and powerfully acted sequences, creating genuine and uncomfortable tension with a level of drama arguably never previously seen before in a British soap opera. The storyline put Brookside in a predominant position and made other soaps, such as ITVs Coronation Street and the revamped Crossroads take notice, and the BBC, previously snobbish about the soap opera genre, finally realised they needed a popular soap and launched equally hard-hitting EastEnders the very same year. Brookside was now seen as a quality soap opera, a cult hit within the core of its target demographic, earning it the reputation as being "The Rolls Royce of Soaps" among devoted fans.

Oblivion Boys: "Pot Snooker" (1986) || This is an undiscovered gem from the first series of "Saturday Live". The Oblivion Boys (Steve Frost and Mark Arden) serve up an inspired sketch filled with surreal and (largely) silent slapstick based around the phenomenom of televised snooker, which was becoming omnipresent on UK TV by the 80s. An interesting 80s pop culture moment occurs when the sketch briefly morphs into "Robin of Sherwood", ( http://tinyurl.com/n8zqn ) a popular 80s show on ITV with music by Clannad (From their album "Legend"). The name is a play of the title of a popular snooker show at the time called "Pot Black". (By the way, anyone thats played snooker, or even watched it on TV, will tell you that the Oblivion Boys deliberately break nearly every rule in snooker right from the start of the sketch onwards.
